A 21-YEAR-OLD Harare man who was arrested and appeared in court for theft of a car from a doctor stationed at Mpilo Central Hospital after forcefully pushing her out and threatening her with death has been convicted and sentenced to 10 years.
Shaun Gonzo appeared yesterday before Bulawayo Regional Magistrate, Mr Mathew Mutiro, facing charges of theft of a motor vehicle. He pleaded guilty.
The magistrate convicted and sentenced him to 10 years. Two years were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within a period of five years. A further year was suspended on condition that he restitutes the complainant, Ms Blessing Mutsawashe Mupuriri. Gonzo will effectively serve seven years in prison.
In sentencing him, the magistrate said theft of a motor vehicle is a serious offence and is prevalent in society.
“The offence was premeditated, which is why Gonzo asked to be transported to Emganwini suburb, then forcefully pushed the complainant out of the vehicle and drove off at high speed. The complainant was left traumatised. He pleaded guilty and showed remorse,” he said.
Prosecutor, Mr Owen Mugari, said that on 5 March 2026, Gonzo approached the complainant, a doctor residing at Mpilo Hospital Quarters, while she was parked in her Mazda Demio in Bulawayo Central Business District.
“Gonzo requested transport to Emganwini, promising to pay upon arrival. The complainant agreed and drove him towards Tasha’s Business Centre. However, upon reaching the area, Gonzo told her to drive further, saying they had not reached their destination,” he said.
“While she was still clutching the steering wheel, Gonzo grabbed her by the neck, threatened to kill her, switched off the ignition and demanded her car and cellphone,” said Mr Mugari.
The offender drove away in the vehicle, leaving the complainant stranded. She later reported the incident at ZRP Nkulumane after seeking help.
Detectives from the Vehicle Theft Squad in Bulawayo launched an urgent investigation, leading to the arrest of the accused and the recovery of the complainant’s Samsung Note 20 cellphone and the motor vehicle in a damaged state. The cost of the damaged parts was estimated at US$1 500.
