AT LEAST 12 people died while several others were injured in separate road traffic accidents that were recorded countrywide since last week.
Some of the people who were injured are still receiving treatment, while others have since been discharged from various hospitals where they were admitted.
In one of the accidents, which occurred at the 285 kilometre peg along Mutare–Masvingo Road on August 22, 2026, at around 5.40pm.
A motorist who was driving a Nissan March carrying eight passengers towards Mutare allegedly lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road to the right and struck a tree before overturning once.
As a result of the crash, three passengers died on the spot, while six others, including the driver, sustained injuries. The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for postmortem examinations.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi also confirmed another fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 40-kilometre peg along the Gweru–Zvishavane Road on August 21, 2026, at approximately 6 pm.
“The driver of a bus carrying 61 passengers towards Zvishavane allegedly lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a descent,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
“The bus veered off the road to the left, overturned and landed on its side. As a result of the accident, two passengers died on the spot, while 22 others, including the driver, sustained injuries. The bodies of the victims were conveyed to Shurugwi District Hospital for postmortem examinations.”
In another fatal road traffic accident which occurred on August 20, 2026, at approximately 2000 hours, at the 2km peg along Ngundu Tanganda Road.
A motorist driving a Toyota Probox vehicle, carrying ten passengers and travelling towards Ngundu, was involved in a head-on collision with a Hino rigid truck which was travelling towards Chiredzi.
Four passengers who were travelling in the Toyota Probox died on the spot, while six others sustained serious injuries. The bodies of the victims were taken to Neshuro District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Another road traffic accident occurred at the 19-kilometre peg along the Mutare–Burma Valley Road on August 19, 2026, when a Toyota Wish vehicle, carrying nine passengers, collided head-on with a Nissan NV350, which was travelling in the opposite direction and carrying five occupants.
As a result of the collision, three passengers who were travelling in the Toyota Wish sustained severe injuries and were pronounced dead upon admission at Victoria Chitepo Hospital.
