No law compels women to revoke maiden names: Mudede

Daniel Nemukuyu Court Reporter
REGISTRAR-GENERAL Mr Tobaiwa Mudede has officially confirmed that no law compels married women under the country’s marriage laws to revoke their maiden names as a precondition to obtain birth certificates for their children.

However, Mr Mudede opposed a requirement compelling his office to publish the order countrywide.
The Registrar-General’s Office has reportedly been insisting that all married women under Chapter 5.11 of the Marriages Act were supposed to drop their maiden names and assume their husbands’ surnames before getting birth certificates for their children.

Libyan ambassador defects to rebels

LIBYAN Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Taher Elmagrahi yesterday defected to the NATO-backed rebels. The rebels are under the National Transitional Council which claims to have taken control of Libya after Muammar Gaddafi reportedly fled.
The Government of Zimbabwe immediately said it did not recognise the NTC and if Mr Elmagrahi had indeed defected, then he had no business here.

Mr Elmagrahi wrote to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcing his decision yesterday.
He then ordered the pulling down of the Libyan flag at the Libyan embassy in Harare.
The all-green national flag was replaced with the green, black and red-coloured flag associated with the rebels.
