Green Fuel in talks to increase ethanol ratio

Green Fuel is discussing with government to increase the ratio of ethanol to petroleum from 10 percent to 20 percent, an official said on Tuesday. At the moment the company uses the ratio of 10 percent ethanol to 90 percent petroleum.

The company has a US$600 million ethanol production and processing plant in Chisumbanje Estates near Chiredzi in Manicaland Province.
Green Fuel hit the streets this month, selling ethanol blended fuel at $1,36 per litre which is lower than current fuel prices which are averaging US$1,45.

Green Fuel spokesperson Ms Lillian Muungani said the increase in ratio would be demand orientated.
“We are currently engaging the Government,” she said.
“The increase in blend is achievable when our production volumes at the plant increase.”

Green Fuel said the new blend would see petrol prices going down to US$1,25 to become the lowest in the region.
Consumers can alternate between blend and petroleum without any resulting effects on their engine performance.
As fuel prices in Zimbabwe are set to decrease, the reverse is happening in Malawi.
