President celebrates 88th birthday

STAFF in the President’s Office yesterday held a ceremony at Munhumutapa Building to celebrate President Mugabe’s 88th birthday.
The Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces took the opportunity to reminisce about the struggle for independence.
He turned 88 yesterday.
Among those present were State Security Minister Sydney Sekeramayi, Minister of State in Vice President Mujuru’s Office Sylvester Nguni and senior officials in the President’s Office.
Speaking at the brief ceremony held just before the weekly Cabinet meeting, President Mugabe said it took true revolutionaries to free Zimbabwe from colonial bondage.
Town clerk placed under house arrest

CHITUNGWIZA town clerk Godfrey Tanyanyiwa, who is facing charges of defrauding council of over US$700 000, was yesterday placed under house arrest.
He will, however, remain in custody after the State invoked Section 121 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act.
The section allows the State to detain an accused for seven days while it considers appealing against the magistrate’s decision.
Tanyanyiwa, who is represented by Mr Admire Rubaya, was granted US$1 000 bail by Harare magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma.
He was ordered to surrender his passport, not to interfere with witnesses and to stay at his Mt Pleasant house.
Biti fumes over Govt tenders

FINANCE Minister Tendai Biti has accused the State Procurement Board of awarding tenders to incompetent companies, seriously disrupting Government work.
Some ministers housed at Kaguvi and Mukwati buildings cannot get into their offices because a company contracted to repair elevators there has failed to do so.
Some of the ministers are now reportedly working from makeshift offices to avoid going up the stairs.
Minister Biti said the companies were so incompetent that even after being paid and provided with materials, they still fail to do their work.
