Trade flows hit by new restrictions implemented by WTO members continued at a historically high level between mid-October 2018 and mid-May 2019, according to the Director-General’s latest mid-year report on trade-related developments presented to members on July 22.
Boosting financial inclusion by harnessing ID ownership
Having an ID is almost always a requirement for opening an account. Within sub-Saharan Africa, 83 percent of commercial banks require a government-issued ID to open an account and regionally, a quarter of adults who have no account at a financial institution say a lack of documentation is one reason why they are unbanked. Half of the unbanked in Madagascar and Zimbabwe cite documentation as a barrier, as do about a third or more in economies such as Guinea, Lesotho, Niger, and Zambia.
Small is the new big
What I will remember at my nephew’s wedding is the Master of Ceremony. This lanky, funny young man is what I would call a total package, the real deal. He had jokes, he could dance and above all left us all happy. ( I could not help but envy his wife — such a happy home) What was most remarkable was the ease with which he belted a joke that fitted with any particular situation during the ceremony. Stabilising Zim dollar through manufacturing
After the banning of the use of the basket of foreign currencies through Statutory Instrument SI 142 there is now talk of how to increase the amounts of foreign currency revenues from exports. According to those experts who are talking of this need, the idea is to stabilise the newly introduced Zimbabwe dollar through the accumulation of adequate foreign reserves, the US dollar being the implied currency making up the bulk of these reserves. The assumption behind this thinking is that our currency needs the US dollar to stabilise it.
