31-year-old man jailed 20 months for having sex with 16-year-old girlfriend

Tinotenda Muronzi (26) of Nyahukwe village in Rusape appeared before Rusape magistrate, Mr Tendai Mahwe, who convicted him of robbery and sentenced him to an effective four years after suspending one year on condition of good behaviour.

A 31-year-old Bulawayo man has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for having consensual sexual intercourse with his 16-year-old girlfriend several times since March last.

Enerst Junior Nyoni of Pumula Old appeared before Western Commonage magistrate, Mr Jeconia Prince Ncube, facing a charge of having sexual intercourse with a minor.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and was initially sentenced to 20 months in prison of which five months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. He will serve 15 months effective.

Prosecutor, Ms Cathrine Kuzu told the court that the accused person and the complainant are boyfriend and girlfriend.
Sometime in March 2025 the accused person met the complainant and proposed to her and she agreed and they became lovers, said Ms Kuzu.

The court heard that since then the accused and the complainant indulged in sexual intercourse several times and without protection until the complainant became pregnant.

The complainant was found pregnant and that is when she disclosed to her grandmother and police about what was happening between her and the accused person.

The accused person was arrested and the complainant was referred to hospital for medical examination, said Ms Kuzu.
