After taking a three-week break, 50 Dates in the Theatre, which is curated by theatre veteran Saimon Mambazo Phiri as part of his 50th birthday celebrations, will be returning tonight with a 1996 classic play – Zwelethu (Our land).
The play was originally written by Mike Sabiko and it is being re-imagined by Sabela Music Projects.
The production will be performed at the Bulawayo Theatre from 7pm. It will run from 16 to 20 September.
Zwelethu is a ground-breaking production by Siyaya Arts and NASA Theatre. It premiered on Independence Day (April 18), in 1996.
The captivating play weaves a rich narrative that defies destiny, fuelled by imagination and complex characters.
Set in the fictional African kingdom of Kwandlala, “Zwelethu” explores the universal theme of power and legacy through the story of Prince Jahana, who yearns to claim his rightful place on the throne from his ailing father, King Sahoho.
Meanwhile, his sister Nomahlubi emerges as a resolute and determined leader, driven to guide her people towards a brighter future.
With its intricate characters and thought-provoking themes, ‘Zwelethu is a testament to the power of storytelling and the human spirit.
Some of the names to look out for who are part of the cast are musician Madlela Sikhobokhobo, Desire Moyo, Gomez Mehluli Dube and Richard Masuku, to mention a few.
