THE road to Maputo is officially open.
With just under a year to go, the African union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 has confirmed the 12 sport codes for the 2026 Youth Games set for December 4 to 13 in Mozambique’s capital.
The announcement kick-starts the countdown to what’s expected to be one of the most competitive editions yet, thanks to a major structural shift that will raise the bar across the region. The Games run from December 4 to 13 in Maputo and, for the first time, athletes will not just show up.
They will have to earn their place.
Strict qualifying standards are coming in and they will be policed by regional sports confederations working with AUSC Region 5. It is a dramatic shift that signals the end of easy selections and soft competition. AUSC Region 5 chief executive Stanley Mutoya made it clear the bar is being lifted.
“We are thrilled to confirm this powerful line up of sports for the Maputo 2026 Games.
“The introduction of qualification standards, set by our regional confederations, is a pivotal step in growing the prestige and competitive quality of our Games. Combined with the core value of inclusivity demonstrated through Special Olympics and para-sports, this programme promises to inspire both excellence and unity.
“Maputo is eagerly preparing to host the Region’s finest young talent in December 2026,” said Mutoya. Twelve codes made the cut.
Athletics stays as one of the main attractions with wheelchair racing, visually impaired categories T11 to T13 and Special Olympics athletes all set to compete. Basketball brings the 3×3 flavour.
Boxing, football, judo, karate, netball, swimming including para categories, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis and volleyball including beach also stand firm on the list.
The shocker is the exclusion of E-sports. It featured at the last edition in Namibia but Maputo has shown it the door. The drama behind the hosting schedule added more intrigue. Mozambique was supposed to host the 2024 Games but swapped with Namibia after raising internal concerns.
That move pushed the 2024 edition to this year and gave Maputo more time to tighten its preparations for 2026. The new qualifying route is expected to change the way countries prepare.
It will force national associations to rethink their talent systems, improve training programmes and invest more in infrastructure.
The message is simple. Only the best will survive.
