Acting President Dr Kembo Mohadi is today expected to preside over a high-level resource mobilisation ceremony to assist Mozambique following widespread flooding that has devastated the neighbouring country.

In a statement, Acting Foreign Affairs and International Trade Permanent Secretary Mrs Petronella Nyagura said Government was moving to assist Mozambique after receiving a distress call from Maputo.

The floods have displaced communities, destroyed infrastructure and cut access to basic services. “As you may be aware, on 17 January 2026, the Government of Zimbabwe received an urgent request for assistance from the Republic of Mozambique following catastrophic flash floods in the provinces of Gaza, Maputo, Maputo Metropolitan and Nampula,” said Mrs Nyagura.

“These floods have resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, with a preliminary report from the National Disaster Risk Management and Reduction of Mozambique indicating that, as of 13 January 2025, eight people have died and over 200 000 families and crops have been devastated.

In response to this crisis, the Ministry is organising a high-level resource mobilisation ceremony, facilitated by ZimAID, to assist the flood victims in Mozambique.”

Local donors and stakeholders are expected to make pledges during the mobilisation ceremony, which will also be attended by Mozambican Ambassador to Zimbabwe Carvalho Muaria.

The event has been scheduled for Harare.

ZimAID is a Government-led programme that aligns with Africa’s objective to pool resources and assist each other when natural disasters strike.
