PARIRENYATWA Group of Hospitals last week showcased the transformed Adlam House nursing training facility, with students, tutors and hospital management crediting First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa’s advocacy for turning a once-dilapidated learning environment into a state-of-the-art institution.
The renovation, implemented by Prevail Group of Companies, addressed longstanding infrastructure challenges including water reticulation, laundry facilities and ablution blocks, while introducing modern teaching technology across the student nurses’ college.
Speaking during a tour of the refurbished facility on Friday, Principal Nursing Officer Ms Nomazulu Mpande said the transformation had reshaped the learning experience for student nurses.
“I would want to appreciate the First Lady, Amai Mnangagwa, who did a very wonderful job in advocating for the renovations of this place.
“This is now a new era, a new outlook for the student nurses who come here,” she said.
Ms Mpande said the college could now compare favourably with first-world training institutions.
“Previously there were so many issues in terms of water, the laundry department and the ablution blocks.
“Now, in this state-of-the-art facility, we are comparing ourselves to the first world — and even better — and we really have to be grateful to the First Lady because we saw her coming, and within a short time this place was changed.”
School of Nursing tutor Ms Sekai Patricia Matonhodze said the improvements had transformed classroom delivery.
“We now have interactive boards in each and every classroom, connected to the internet.
“There is no more squabbling for projectors. Searching for information and verifying it with students is now a thing of joy,” she said, adding that enrolment numbers had grown thanks to expanded learning spaces.
Fourth-year student Mr Emmanuel Zirema said the First Lady’s personal intervention had been decisive.
“She took a tour and saw the dilapidated infrastructure.
“She then gave us a voice for advocating to Government so the renovation could happen. She showed us motherly love,” he said.
Student nurse representative Ms Petronella Kambanje said: “I feel genuinely hurt when I think of how things were, and optimistic now.
“We have a safe environment for learning and professional development. We really appreciate the kind gesture Amai Mnangagwa has done for student nurses at Parirenyatwa,” she said.
Nursing officials expressed hope that the model would be replicated at other training institutions across the country as Government continues its health infrastructure modernisation drive.
