AIR Tanzania will tomorrow launch a new Victoria Falls-Dar es Salaam-Cape Town route, a development expected to boost tourism traffic and further strengthen Zimbabwe’s expanding air connectivity.
The new service aligns with Zimbabwe’s “Open Skies Policy”, which has continued to attract more international airlines into the country.
Government has been accelerating aviation infrastructure upgrades and modernisation in line with global standards, making the country more competitive as a regional air transport hub.
Under the open skies policy, foreign airlines are free to introduce new routes into Zimbabwe or increase flight frequencies.
The latest development follows major investments by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, including new airspace management equipment, completion of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport VVIP Pavilion, and the signing of several aviation cooperation agreements.
As a result, 23 international airlines are now flying into Zimbabwe.
In a statement, the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) confirmed the launch.
“Airports Company of Zimbabwe Private Limited welcomes Air Tanzania Company Limited, The Wings of Kilimanjaro, as they launch their new route connecting Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam to our majestic Victoria Falls on December 11, 2025.
“This triangular service, which continues to Cape Town, significantly boosts Zimbabwe’s growing air connectivity, reinforcing Victoria Falls International Airport’s status as a prime regional tourism hub and enhancing our ability to facilitate seamless multi-destination travel for both leisure and business visitors across Southern and East Africa,” said ACZ.
Air Tanzania’s Zimbabwe Country Manager, Mr Ismail Mpinga, told local media that the new route will initially operate twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays.
“We decided to go to Victoria Falls and Cape Town as they are tourist destinations. We look at these two destinations as brothers and sisters, so we will link them in terms of marketing with the tourism board,” he said.
Developing a modern and competitive aviation sector is a key pillar of Zimbabwe’s economic growth aspirations under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).
The Government is currently upgrading airports countrywide to meet international standards and attract more airlines.
This strategy has already seen global carriers like Qatar Airways, Eurowings Discover, Emirates, Ethiopian Airways, South African Airways, Kenya Airways, Airlink and fastjet servicing Zimbabwean destinations.
