PREPARATIONS for the 11th edition of the Zimpapers Annual Cancer Power Walk are now at an advanced stage, with several individuals and corporates registering to participate.
The event promotes fitness and also affords communities an opportunity to learn about different kinds of cancers and prevention mechanisms such as early detection and treatment, which save lives.
The event is held under the theme: “Remember, Early Detection Saves Lives – Get checked now!”.
This year, there will be awareness session on thyroid cancer, which affects the neck. The symptoms include a lump (nodule) that can be felt through the skin on the neck, a feeling that close–fitting shirt collars are becoming too tight, the voice becoming hoarse, difficulties in swallowing food or even water, swollen lymph nodes and pain in the neck and throat.
Zimpapers Corporate Communications and Sustainability Manager, Mrs Pauline Matanda, said the Cancer Power Walk had become a fixture on Zimbabwe’s health and wellness calendar, taking place annually on the first Saturday of November.
“This year marks the 11th edition of the Zimpapers Cancer Power Walk, a milestone that reflects more than a decade of raising awareness, mobilising communities and supporting cancer care in Zimbabwe,” she said.
“Held annually on the first Saturday of November, this year’s event will take place on November 7 under the theme, ‘Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters’.
“The theme recognises that while every cancer journey is different, every person affected by cancer deserves support, dignity and hope.”
She said the Cancer Power Walk has grown into a national movement that brings together survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, corporates and communities in support of Island Hospice and Health Care.
The events will be held simultaneously in Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare, Gweru, Masvingo and Chinhoyi to raise awareness, encourage early detection and generate resources for cancer support services.”
“Participants will have an opportunity to take part in a 5km walk, 10km walk or run and a 21km run or cycle event,” she said.
“The day will culminate in wellness exhibitions, cancer awareness engagements and health checks and screenings.
“Alongside Zumba and aerobics, we are also pleased to introduce Tai Chi wellness sessions through the support of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Zimbabwe, further promoting the importance of holistic health and wellbeing.”

“As we celebrate 11 years of impact, we will also roll out the Cancer Champions campaign, showcasing inspiring stories that highlight courage, resilience and hope,” she said.
“Through these stories, we want Zimbabweans to appreciate that cancer is not just a health issue but a community issue that requires collective action.
“We invite individuals, families, schools, churches, sports clubs and corporates to register, sponsor, donate and participate.”
