GOVERNMENT has committed to ensuring that all Primary and Secondary Schools in rural Zimbabwe are fully electrified by 2026.
The undertaking by the Second Republic is meant to give the rural learner a chance to catch up with their urban counterparts, said the Minister of Energy and Power Development July Moyo, in his keynote address at the commissioning of the Leanmore, Alpha, Montrose electrician project.
“In the case of schools, we are not going to wait for electrification until 2030. We are going to do it by the end of next year, 2026. Every secondary school, every primary school will be electrified,” said Minister Moyo.
He said total electrification of all rural schools is in fulfilment of President Mnangagwa’s vision of giving rural children a chance to catch up with those who are in urban areas and electricity is the number one enabler.
Minister Moyo said once all rural schools are electrified, it was naturally expected that pass rates will also improve.
“If we give electricity to all the schools, we expect that the teachers supervised by their headmasters or school heads, supervised by their district school inspectors, that the results will become better and better than what they were before the electricity,” said Minister Moyo.
He implored parents to ensure that children are getting a better education because of the electrification.
