RUBEN AMORIM believes Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s public vote of confidence for him has had a ‘huge impact’ on Manchester United’s season.
The Old Trafford part owner said during the October international break that the Portuguese boss should be judged after three years.
And he has only done one so far — with the anniversary of his first game in charge coming up on Monday.Amorim looked to be under severe pressure following the 3-1 defeat at Brentford in late September — but since then they have won three and drawn two. And the former Sporting Lisbon coach believes Ratcliffe’s words last month helped to calm things down around the club.
He said: “If you remember when Jim gave the interview, it settled down a lot around the club.
“The noise around the club changed completely and that was really important for the team and it’s really important for the team and me.
“It had a huge impact —not on the way I do things – but on the way people see what we are doing. So it was massive for us.”
It was early October when Ratcliffe said Amorim must prove over a three year period that he can be a great United coach. He said there is no switch that could be flicked to get the Red Devils back on track and that there would be no knee jerk reactions. Amorim said it was nice to hear that— but it was something he already knew as that had always been the message behind the scenes. In an interview on StanSport, he added: “It’s always really important — but it’s more important for the fans to understand we have a clear path and we are going to continue to follow it.
“For me it doesn’t change much — I’m not worried about losing my job. “It’s a good thing to hear but it will not change anything in the way I behave. I know clearly which path I have to go.”United’s next game is against Everton on Monday night – which will be a year to the day since his first match in charge, a 1-1 draw at Ipswich.
Amorim said: “It’s been a journey, I’ve learned a lot. “Sometimes you think we are too young and you are just winning — then you face a different result, way of people seeing your job, what you are doing.“Its hard sometimes but you learn a lot.
“I think I’m a better manager now and I’m ready for the future and the present.
“A really tough journey but I see it was necessary and we are in a better place because of it.”
Amorim says that during this 12 months he has not lost sight of how lucky he is to have the job.
He added: “I have that feeling many times – especially at Old Trafford because in the manager’s dressing room you have all the pictures of the former managers.
“You can sense the history of the club. There are like 23 people who have had this job so it’s a big responsibility.” —Sun.
