Reflecting on 2025 as it nears its close, South African Amapiano rising star Zandile “Zee” Nxumalo is looking back on a year marked by achievements, challenges, and plans.
Nxumalo, in an interview with IOL, shared that her greatest achievements this year include the success of her hits “Ngisakuthanda” and “Mamma”, which have resonated deeply with fans.
Before doing any musical projects, Nxumalo wants to give “Mamma” a moment to shine. “Right now I want to celebrate ‘Mamma’, it’s honestly the song of the year for me, and the love it’s getting from people is crazy.”
Winning the Basadi in Music Female Artist of the Year was a highlight, a reminder that her hard work is paying off. “It’s motivation to keep going even harder,” she says.
The artist expressed the overwhelming feeling of being in a short film, “Being able to do something different and show another side of my creativity was such a proud moment for me. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and showed me that I can tell stories in more than one way,” she stated.
She was also surprised to be named Most Streamed Female Vocalist in South Africa, a testament to her growing popularity.
Challenges and Lessons Learned
Nxumalo candidly discussed the reality behind the music industry’s façade, highlighting the substantial financial burden of being an independent artist. She explains, “Everything is in my own hands, because I’m independent. From visuals to studio time to travel.”
She notes that more success leads to more expenses and greater growth, but she has learned to view these costs as necessary investments.
“It’s not easy, but it’s worth it,” she affirms, expressing her commitment to managing the financial aspects of her career more effectively.
Reflecting on a year of significant growth and persistent challenges, Nxumalo shared a key lesson learned: “I think my biggest lesson was spending too much time in studio sessions that didn’t add value.” She states.
Moving forward, “I’m going to be more intentional. I want every session at the studio to have purpose and meaning,” she added.
She shared that Dlala Thukzin is an artist who has had a significant impact on her music career. “He’s such a genius when it comes to sound. Working around him taught me to trust my instincts more and to take my sound seriously.
“Uyakwazi ukuqinisa umuntu (He can hone a person.) He really helped me see the power in being confident about what I bring to the table.”
Future Plans
Apart from the upcoming “Ngisakuthanda” short film, Nxumalo is planning a memorable experience for her loyal supporters, who have been with her every step of the way. She shared that she is preparing something for her fans, “I’ve been planning something really special, a proper fan experience, because my supporters mean everything to me.”
