JULIUS Mashonganyika, a former Tennis Director at White Rhinos Tennis Club here in Harare, and a United States Tennis Association (USTA) Coaching Tennis Specialist, has been awarded a scholarship supported by Richmond Region Tourism to further his higher education in Health and Physical Education and Sports Management at Virginia State University (VSU), Petersburg, Virginia.
The scholarship represents another significant milestone in Mashonganyika’s remarkable journey from the high-density suburb of Mufakose in Harare to becoming an internationally certified tennis professional, community volunteer, and university student in the United States.
The Richmond Region Tourism scholarship will support Mashonganyika’s educational journey as he continues developing the academic knowledge and professional skills needed to make a greater contribution to physical education, sports management, coaching, and community development.
Expressing his gratitude, Mashonganyika stated: “I am deeply honoured and grateful to Richmond Region Tourism for investing in my education and future.
“Coming from Mufakose in Harare, Zimbabwe, where I first developed my passion for tennis in 1984, I never imagined that my journey through sports would lead me to such wonderful educational opportunities in the United States.”
“This scholarship is not only a personal achievement but also an inspiration to young athletes and aspiring sports professionals, particularly those from disadvantaged communities in Zimbabwe and across Africa.
“Education and sports have the power to transform lives, create opportunities, and develop future leaders.”
Despite his achievements in the United States, Mashonganyika remains committed to supporting grassroots tennis development in his home country Zimbabwe.
He is promoting the Zimbabwe Rural Junior Tennis and Learning Initiative, focusing on expanding access to tennis, physical education, and youth development opportunities in rural communities, including Hwedza, Murehwa, and Mutoko. His long-term vision is to combine his international coaching experience with his university education to develop sustainable sports programs that promote physical fitness, education, inclusion, and community empowerment.
Mashonganyika believes that age, background, and financial circumstances should never prevent anyone from pursuing education or achieving personal goals.
“Returning to university later in life demonstrates that learning has no age limit. I encourage young people in Zimbabwe, particularly those growing up in underserved communities, to remain focused, work hard, believe in themselves, and never give up on their dreams.
“I sincerely thank Richmond Region Tourism, Virginia State University, my professors, mentors, and everyone who continues to support my academic and professional journey.
“I look forward to using the knowledge gained through my studies to serve communities in both the United States and Zimbabwe.”
Mashonganyika is currently pursuing undergraduate studies in Health and Physical Education at Virginia State University, with a strong interest in sports management, youth development, physical fitness, and sports administration.

His international coaching experience also includes serving as a professional tennis coach in South Africa, where he worked at Mayfield Tennis Club in Rondebosch, Cape Town, under the Western Province tennis coaching structure.
After relocating to the United States in 2010, Mashonganyika continued advancing his professional tennis qualifications through the United States Tennis Association (USTA), Professional Tennis Registry (PTR), and United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA), now known as the Racquet Sports Professionals Association (RSPA).
