THE Broad Alliance Against Sanctions has welcomed the tabling of Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill, calling it a crucial step towards addressing sanctions imposed on the country.
In a statement, BAAS co-founder and chairperson Mr Calvern Chitsunge commended the Government’s efforts to prioritise the welfare of Zimbabweans and urged Parliament to pass the Bill swiftly.
He said the proposed parliamentary system for electing the president was welcome and aligned with international practice.
“BAAS conducted consultations with its membership countrywide and 100 percent of our membership are in total agreement and in support of this Amendment Bill as it gives Government enough time to plan, implement and finish projects with much concentration on the economy rather than politics,” the statement added, describing the Bill as “a beacon of hope for millions of Zimbabweans suffering under the weight of unjust sanctions.”
The group called on Parliament to act “swiftly and decisively to pass this amendment, ensuring our people get the relief they desperately need,” and said it has been running countrywide awareness campaigns to educate members on the Bill’s long term benefits.
BAAS encouraged its members and the public to attend parliamentary public hearings and register their support for the Bill.
Formed in 2019, BAAS is a group of ordinary citizens who have camped outside the American Embassy in Westgate, Harare, to hold anti-sanctions campaigns and vigils since March 29, 2019.
