Are shorts for everyone?

Shorts are a very significant fashion apparel that have actually been around for a couple of centuries and grew more popular in the past century.

They are great for different occasions especially the casual or  on a more relaxed occasion and good for the hot or summer days.  Whilst they are one of the most   used fashion items, shorts require extra caution as not all shorts are meant for everyone.

A simple fashion mistake can easily turn your look into a fashion disaster.  Pay attention to a few of  these details when you consider wearing shorts or want to make shorts a part of your wardrobe.

BODY TYPE

Consider your body type before you select a pair of shorts to wear.  Not all designs and shapes look aesthetically appealing on all shapes and silhouettes of people.

For an inverted triangle (a body type that has the shoulders as the widest part of the body with hip being the smallest part), the best shorts to wear for this body type are the A-line, wide-legged and flowy shorts: these help create balance of fit.

Avoid tight fitting shorts especially on thin material if you do so wear something flowy on top like a kimono for balance of the look. Also avoid low-rise shorts as this may create an exaggerated larger upper body, rather go for high waist preferably non body hugging.

On the circular body type (a body figure that is the widest on the stomach area with smaller hip and  shoulder area), you need to avoid tight or body hugging shorts.

If you decide to wear them, ensure that you wear a flowy overlay on top.  The best shorts for this body type are the flowy or A-line shorts like the wide-legged shorts, pleated shorts, culottes or Bermuda paper-bag shorts: they are stylish and fashionable.

For the hourglass shape (this is the body type with the widest measurement of the body being the hip area with a similar or the same measurement on the bust area and a small defined waist), wear  high waist shorts, belted shorts, fitted and body hugging cuts, also flowy and A-line work on this body type.

Avoid low-rise shorts as these may hide natural body curves creating an imbalance.

On the rectangular body type, it is not very difficult to find what suits you best as most retail companies sell products that are best for this body type.

The rectangular body type is one where the measurement for the shoulder, waist and hip are the same or similar.

The best designs are paper-bag shorts, culottes, A-line, streamline pleated shorts, high-waist shorts and bloomer shorts.  Avoid shorts with wide belts as this may make you look big on the waist, creating a straighter figure.

Also avoid straight designs, low rise shorts and boxy shapes as they do not look very flattering on this body type.

LENGTH

Length is very crucial when it comes to shorts, not all lengths will look good on every one.  Choose the length you like and feel comfortable in it but also consider your body type, the weather and skin care.

For a plus size or people on the heavier side, the best length is the mid-thigh, knee-length or mid (3/4) length; short shorts are not recommended.  If you are on the slim side: short shorts, mid-thigh or a longer choice can work but do not ignore body type as you choose shape and cut. Consider a good skin care routine to ensure that you look gorgeous under those shorts.

OCCASION

Consider the occasion: what you wear for an art festival, family party, at the beach, at a pool party, work or social event may not all be the same.  Bikini shorts, spandex shorts and bloomer shorts are great for a pool party whilst a tailored pleated pair of shorts, Bermuda and classic culottes may work for a corporate or casual party.

Always do your homework before choosing the shorts to wear for any occasion.
