Artists reflect on Independence and Easter

THIS year two significant celebrations are converging: Independence Day and Easter.


For the nation’s artists, these occasions are more than just holidays − they are opportunities to express the country’s rich cultural heritage and spiritual depth.

Running under the theme “Zim@ 45: Devolve and Develop Together towards Vision 2030,” today Zimbabwe celebrates 45 years.

As Zimbabwe celebrates its independence and Easter, artists reflect on the significance of these special celebrations.
Gospel artist Dorcas Moyo will be doing donations at Victoria Chitepo Hospital and Zororai Old peoples home.

The artist’s manager, Peter Madondo said there have a busy schedule for the whole weekend.
“Usually Easter Holidays are hectic for us. We are kicking off with some donations that we are giving to Victoria Chitepo Hospital and Zororai Old peoples home on Good Friday.

“We will then proceed to Harare for a show that we are going to be performing on an all-night prayer. We will proceed to another Show Saturday afternoon in Mufakose before we return to Mutare where we will minister again on the Sunday.

“We cherish the gains of independence maximally. It has brought about an environment where we freely express ourselves.

“We are forever indebted to the sacrifice and gallantry exhibited by the sons and daughters of Zimbabwe. We say long live and happy 45th anniversary Zimbabwe,” he said.
Renowned sculptor Dominic Benhura reflected on the true meaning of the holidays.

He believes that both Easter and Independence Day were about making sacrifices for the greater good.
For him, this meant putting in extra hours to create beautiful pieces that would bring joy to others.

“I will be working throughout the holidays at my workshop. Interestingly both holidays have an element of sacrifices for others. Which is something we have to do in life if everyone could have same mind set for one another. Wish everyone a safe holiday,” he said.

Actress and producer Sipilisiwe Kaikeni said she will use this time to reflect on her career and personal life.

“Easter is a time of reflection and setting intentions for both in personal life or career, it is time to reflect on the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the promise of hope and new life, so I am going to spend my holidays at church.

“On the 19th I will be attending the fashion show I am participating on the show as a e model amongst other artists and I am going to be dressed by Chicco fashions,” she said.

Founder of Miss Rural Zimbabwe Sipho Mazibuko is set to host a crochet competition for designers.

“We have a very big event, the crochet competition. This competition is going to be in the provinces of Zimbabwe.

“We did a callout about that, and 200 people are going to participate in the competition that will show our culture. It is also part of our celebration for Easter and Independence,” she said.
