SEVERAL artists visited Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison yesterday where they gave hope to the inmates.
Chikurubi has over 2,800 inmates.
It’s now the home of Jaison Muvevi, who is facing multiple cases of murder, and another inmate who is serving 236 years for murder.
Yesterday, the artists were led by Prison and Correctional Services Ambassador, Sulu Chimbetu.
The visit is in preparation of the Prisons and Correctional Day to be held tomorrow at Damview.
“We are showing love to them since they are always our fans,” said Sulu.
“It is good in the rehabilitation of our inmates, so that they have an appreciation that they have friends outside. This will go a long way in uplifting their morale.
“The inmates will be exhibiting their artefacts, what they are doing as part of their rehabilitation.”
He added:
“We should be united as artists in Zimbabwe, not only when it comes to certain problems, but even on certain programmes, we should be together, work together, collaborate as artists.
“I was happy to interact with different artists from different genres, learning how they do their stuff.
“I was also impressed by mixing and mingling with inmates, it is fundamental to have certain public figures joining forces, joining hands to spend time with inmates.
“These inmates have been happy, they had a great time.”
Faheem Somanje, the son of the legendary Daiton, said:
“Being jailed can be part of life but to commit another crime, after going through rehabilitation, becomes a problem.
“This visit is important to many of these men and women who are behind bars.”
Spencer Khumbulani said:
“To remember them is one thing but that they should learn that when they leave this place, they will not repeat the same mistake.”
Obert Chari said:
“This visit was meant to give hope to some of these inmates.
“As musicians, we had to have time with these people so that we give them hope.”
Agnes Triggy said:
“This is important as it will help to give hope to the inmates that even when they are out, they will be welcomed back into the community.
“We are showing love to them since they are always our fans.”
Other artists who attended were Leonard Zhakata, who is trending amid a national debate in which his Mugove is being considered as probably the finest song by a Zimbabwean artist.
Mbida D, Tendai Chimombe, Tendai and Morgan Dembo, Prison Band, Cello Culture, Saiwe Chimbetu and Beverly also attended.
