Baba Machanic Manyeruke, a revered figure in gospel music and living legend, has revealed that his family, friends and associates are urging him to reconsider his decision to retire from performing.

Known as the grandfather of Zimbabwean gospel, Manyeruke has recently returned from a productive three-month tour of the United Kingdom, where he held a series of shows and church conferences.

His four children—Misheck, Violet, Tambudzai and Alexander—hosted him during his visit, where churches and promoters sought the services of the founder of The Puritans.

In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub earlier this week, the Zim gospel pioneer shared his thoughts on retirement and 2026 plans.

“I left Zimbabwe in October for the United Kingdom, where I was celebrated like a king,” he shared.

“My children invited me to visit them and refresh myself, and I had an incredible experience overseas. I was truly humbled by the love I received from my children, grandchildren and even from strangers and fans. I am grateful that people still respect me and want my services.”

Manyeruke performed in several cities, including Leicester, Milton Keynes and Kent, where he was encouraged to continue making music despite his age.

“I toured several cities where my hosts urged me to keep going, regardless of my age. As someone who has always prioritised fitness, it’s hard for some people to believe I’m in my 80s and still going strong.

“I have dedicated so many years to music that I feel I need to rest, concentrate on mentorship, or simply retreat to my rural home for some fresh air,” he stated.

When asked about his retirement plans, he shared that a group of supporters has been pushing him to rethink his decision:

“There is a clique that has been encouraging me to reconsider my retirement, promising a proper retirement strategy. My team wants me to hold a series of shows before I finally retire, and I have accepted that they are planning something significant.

“After all, I am singing for the Lord and serving Him with distinction, which has always been my calling.”

Manyeruke, a trailblaser in the Zim gospel scene, firmly believes that divine grace has sustained him throughout his career.

“I can’t claim to be clever; it’s God’s grace that has brought me this far, even in the face of those who wish me harm. Some online commentators have claimed I will die soon, but I won’t panic; I leave everything in God’s hands. Only God knows when I will meet my Maker,” he emphasised.

As one of the pioneers in gospel music and a respected voice in the industry, Manyeruke expressed his commitment to mentoring young artists as a way of giving back to Zimbabwe.

“I have always mentored several musicians without touting my accomplishments. I believe the time will come when my mentees will share their testimonies about how I impacted their lives, whether during my lifetime or after my departure.

“As a musician and father, I do my job quietly, allowing the world to judge me through my works, which will endure beyond my death.”

Having begun his musical journey during the colonial era, Manyeruke urged creatives to adapt to changing times.

“Many of us started long ago, and with today’s technological revolution, I hope to see artists embrace these changes. Personally, I have also adopted new technologies, recognizing that my family can monetise my music even after I’m gone,” he stressed.
