THE family of the late Star FM presenter, Babongile Sikhonjwa, has endorsed a fundraising initiative launched by his friends to support the funeral logistics.

It has also been made clear that the fundraising exercise has not been motivated by financial challenges facing the family but by his friends who feel they need to contribute towards the funeral expenses.

Babo is set to be laid to rest at his rural home in Mlowezi, Insiza, on Saturday.

He died on Sunday at the age of 49.

He was a radio host, MC, comedian, and cultural activist.

A memorial service will be held in his honour at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre tomorrow.

After the service, his body will be taken to Mlowezi, where it will lie in state before his burial on Saturday.

His sister, Babusisiwe Mathabile Moyo, confirmed that the family has endorsed the fundraising initiative.

“They notified us that they want to raise funds in honour of their friend and, as the family, we have given them the green light to do so,” said Moyo.

One of the organisers of the fundraising initiative, Qhubani Moyo, said Babo’s influence stretched far beyond Zimbabwe’s borders and many of his friends around the world were eager to contribute.

A GoFundMe page has been set up while local well-wishers can also donate via EcoCash or Mukuru on +263 772 748 000 (registered under Qhubani Moyo).

“In our culture, when one passes away, friends and the community contribute whatever they can to assist with the burial arrangements.

“As friends, we agreed to organise something for our late brother.

“This is our own version of Zibuthe or Incebethu — traditional community initiatives where people come together to support a bereaved family.

“All the money raised will be handed over directly to the Sikhonjwa family, who have blessed this initiative,” Moyo said.

He said the move was not motivated by financial difficulties on the family’s part but, rather, as a gesture of appreciation for Sikhonjwa’s life and the lasting friendships he nurtured.
