When tragedy struck on Lake Kariba on August 11 this year, heroic efforts unfolded both on the water and behind the scenes.
A Sahwira houseboat captain and his crew, who were out on the lake with clients when Mbuya Nehanda ferry capsized, did not hesitate to act.
Captain Collins Tadziripa Chaparira and his team — comprising Asan Linge, Trythings Nhoro, Adam Mugwamadzi and Jorofani Muchadura — quickly informed their clients of the unfolding emergency. Without hesitation, the clients agreed to abandon their plans and assist with the rescue operation.
The crew immediately boarded a speed boat and raced to the scene, where they pulled numerous survivors from the water. They also helped recover the bodies of those who had already perished.
Meanwhile, in Harare, Chinhoyi and Karoi, a rescue team was swiftly assembled, made up of hearse drivers, morticians and other executives who travelled to Kariba to assist with the recovery efforts. Nyaradzo Group deployed ambulances to the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) harbour and provided a number of body bags, which were used to carry the deceased. The company also distributed blankets to survivors who had sought refuge at Mahombekombe Primary School.
The ferry tragedy claimed 97 lives while 77 people were rescued by various stakeholders.
These actions formed part of Nyaradzo Group’s broader community social responsibility initiative, and complemented the work that was done by the Government and other stakeholders to rescue, recover and bring closure to those affected by the tragedy.
