LEONARD Zhakata and Thomas Makion have done enough to cement their place in the history of Zimbabwean music.
Makion is late but Zhakata continues to thrive.
Makion’s son, Thomas Makion Junior, has been working hard to try and preserve his father’s legacy.
Now, another member of this extended musical family, Freddy “Biggaz” Zhakata, says he is a man on a big mission.
A nephew of Leonard Zhakata, Biggaz considers himself fortunate to have been born into a family with a rich musical heritage.
With two albums to his name – Iniwo Zvangu, released in 2017, and Ngoma Kurira (2019) – as well as singles such as Katundu and Kwese Kuchema, Biggaz believes he has what it takes to protect his family’s musical legacy.
“I might be a hustler but music is my true calling because I have a responsibility to preserve our family’s legacy,” said Biggaz.
“I was blessed to have relatives who defied the odds and paved the way for us, particularly my elders Leonard Zhakata and the late Thomas Makion.
“Although I was still young when Makion passed away, the few moments I spent with him taught me valuable lessons about life and music.
“As for Zhakata, I am grateful to have someone like him supporting my vision.
“He has been a blessing to my journey as a musician, and his dream is to see me excel in everything I do.”
Biggaz, who leads Team Maungwe Band, said Zhakata continues to encourage him to give his best shot in music.
“I can’t afford to disappoint Bishop Zhakata because he has been a great source of inspiration in my artistic journey.
“I can never thank him enough for everything he has done for me. He remains my source of inspiration and hope.
“As a man, I respect the path I chose to become a musician, thanks to the guidance of my elders, Leonard Zhakata and the late Thomas Makion.”
The talented keyboardist added:
“Zhakata has also taught me the importance of prayer, and on many occasions he has blessed my hustles.
“I feel honoured to be related to him because it means a lot to me.
“Even carrying the Zhakata surname alone comes with great responsibility, and I can’t afford to disappoint him.”
Raised in a God-fearing family in rural Zimbabwe, Biggaz said he places God at the centre of everything he does and hopes his faith will guide him to greater success.
As he continues to build his own identity in the music industry, Biggaz remains determined to honour the legacy of the Maungwe family while carving out his own path.
With the guidance of the living legend, unwavering faith and a growing catalogue of music, the emerging artist believes he is well-positioned to ensure that the family’s rich musical heritage will continue to inspire future generations.
