A cheeky Chegutu man who jumped into a woman’s car at a traffic light and sped off like a movie stuntman has been slapped with a five-year jail term.
Moses Lloyd Hungwe (35) was convicted of vehicle theft by the Chegutu Magistrates’ Court after his bizarre daylight hijack left motorists stunned.
the incident occurred on 28 November 2024, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ). The 37-year-old woman stopped at a robot along the Chegutu–Harare Road around 2PM.
“The offender bundled himself into the stationary vehicle via the passenger door. Startled and in fear, the victim quickly disembarked from the vehicle. The offender drove the vehicle away,” read the NPAZ statement.
But his joyride was short-lived — police cornered him near Bryden Country School, and the US$5 000 car was recovered.
Hungwe was sentenced to five years in prison, with one year suspended for five years, leaving him to serve an effective four years behind bars.
“Motorists are urged to ensure their vehicle doors are always locked to reduce chances of falling victim to criminal elements as in this case,” warned the NPAZ.
