Vendors at Boka affected by the September 9 directive to relocate to designated markets are seeking clarity from the City of Harare on where they will be moved, amid concerns that Harare South does not have a designated vending site.
Speaking after a Ward 1 pre-budget consultative meeting on Saturday, Ward 1 councillor Temany Utete said vendors wanted to know what arrangements council had made for their relocation.
Cllr Utete said residents also called for the repair of a detour road that was used during the construction of the Trabablas road project.
“The road belongs to Fidelity residents but was being used as a commercial road for vehicles travelling to Masvingo, so it has started to develop potholes,” he said.
Water shortages were also raised during the meeting, with residents saying some water pipes damaged during the Trabablas construction had not been repaired.
Cllr Utete said the damaged pipes were still leaking, resulting in water losses and affecting efforts to pump water to Fidelity.
Residents also raised concerns over the state of the Boka cemetery, with some people allegedly building on the edge of the cemetery and others selling flowers there.
“Residents were saying, can we dignify our dead by putting a fence or Durawall so that people do not walk in the cemetery? Some are selling flowers, which residents said does not dignify the dead,” he said.
Fidelity residents also called for improved public lighting, saying the area had neither tower lights nor street lights.
Cllr Utete said Harare South had only one clinic, located in Hopley, while revenue collection performance in Ward 1 stood at 26 percent.
Residents also raised concerns over the absence of a district office in Ushewokunze and Fidelity, which they said made it difficult for them to access council services.
