AT least 200 people with disabilities will receive wheelchairs which have been donated by a Good Samaritan.
Musician Greatman will receive two of the wheelchairs.
The benefactor, Justice Mhishi, through his Justice Mhishi Foundation, said he is on a drive to donate wheelchairs to people with disabilities. “We have started in Harare but we are not stopping there, we shall move to other areas as we are aiming to donate over 200 wheelchairs throughout the country.
“This is not the beginning, we have done such initiatives before,” said Mhishi.
Mhishi said many people with disabilities struggle to access mobility equipment because of economic hardships.
“We realised that there are many people with disabilities who are suffering silently because they cannot afford wheelchairs and other assistive devices. Some are unable to move around freely, while others have missed opportunities in life because of their condition. As a foundation, we felt it was important to intervene and bring relief to such individuals and families.”
He said the programme was also about restoring dignity, confidence and independence to the beneficiaries.
“A wheelchair may look like a small thing to some people but, to the beneficiary it means freedom, dignity and an opportunity to live a better life.
“We want people with disabilities to know that they are valued members of society and that they deserve equal opportunities, just like everyone else,” said Mhishi.
