VETERAN Rhumba maestro Themba “Boyoyo” Mathe will celebrate his 51st birthday in style this Saturday with a special show at Blue Lagoon in Bulawayo, where he will be joined by a host of fellow musicians for what promises to be a memorable night of music and merriment.
Boyoyo, a household name on the Rhumba scene, began his career in the music industry as a dancer for the late Rhumba legend Ndux Malax, before teaming up with fellow band mates from Malax’s group to form the Mokis Connection Band. The outfit dominated stages across the country, gaining a cult following for its energetic live performances and timeless hits.
Known for his witty lyrics, distinctive diction, and stage charisma, Boyoyo distinguished himself as one of the genre’s most original voices. His transition from dancer to composer and lead vocalist was marked by a string of hits including Basiboy, Abafana Be Mokis, Wafa Wafa Mthakathi, and Masibanda, to name but a few.
After parting ways with Mokis Connection, he formed his own group, Mthimbani Sound Blasters, and continued to deliver Rhumba hits until health challenges, affecting both his vision and voice—slowed his momentum. Despite these setbacks, Boyoyo remains passionate about music.
“This is a special day for me as I celebrate my birthday, and I hope music fans will come and celebrate with me. Baphathele iqhawe icake!” said Boyoyo.
“The show will feature amazing artistes including Dubia Masters, Ndux Junior, Titus Majaya, and MaBhitso Sounds, among others. I’ll never lose hope as long as I’m still alive, indoda iwa isiya phambili.”
He revealed that the birthday gig was organised by his management team and loyal fans who wanted to honour his contribution to the genre.
Now based in Nathisa, Maphisa, Boyoyo said that while some of his band members are in South Africa, he continues to perform live when booked.
“I work with a local team here. When I’m not doing music, I focus on farming to make ends meet,” he said.
The father of six—three boys and three girls, shared that one of his children is showing an interest in following in his musical footsteps.
“It’s too early to say, but I can see signs in one of them.”
Boyoyo also revealed that he is working on a new album titled Ngahle Ngeqa, which is expected to be released later this year.
As he celebrates another year of life and legacy, Saturday’s show will not just be a birthday party, but a tribute to a Rhumba trailblazer who has danced, sung, and inspired through generations.
