ZIMPLATS Holdings Limited has announced a major leadership transition, with long-serving chief executive officer Alexander “Alex” Mhembere stepping down from his executive role.
In a statement on the Australia Stock Exchange, Dr Stanley John Segula has been appointed as the incoming CEO, effective November 1, 2026.
End of an Era: Mhembere’s 19-Year Tenure
Mr Mhembere, who originally took the helm as CEO on October 1, 2007, leaves behind a nearly two-decade legacy that transformed Zimplats from its early open-pit origins into a heavily mechanised underground mining and integrated processing powerhouse.
During his tenure, he steered approximately US$1,8 billion in strategic investments, which included comprehensive mine replacement and development initiatives; expanded concentrator processing capacities; the upgrade and commissioning of the Selous smelter, effectively tripling national smelting capability; pioneering sustainable energy solutions, such as the commissioning of a 35MW solar power plant at Selous as the first phase of a broader 185MW renewable energy roadmap.
While stepping down as Group CEO, Mr Mhembere will preserve vital institutional knowledge and governance continuity by remaining as chairperson of the operating subsidiary, Zimbabwe Platinum Mines (Private) Limited (ZPM).
Looking ahead
Taking over the chief executive office is Dr Stanley John Segula, a mining executive with over 30 years of comprehensive experience spanning the entire mining value chain.
Dr Segula has served as the managing director of ZPM since May 2015 and previously held vital operational leadership posts, including chief operating officer and senior general manager of mining.
He holds a PhD in Strategic Management and Leadership, an MBA, a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Mining Engineering, a mine manager’s Certificate of Competency and is a certified professional engineer.
The Zimplats board expressed confidence that Dr Segula’s extensive operational history and strategic vision will ensure a seamless leadership transition and continued growth for the company’s future endeavours.
