Building our future: Empowering rural children through education

More than 6 decades ago, the late US President JF Kennedy placed before his people a bold and staggering vision for both the future of his nation and the rest of the world.

In a visionary declaration for the future, he not only directed the people towards a common shared goal, but also painted a picture of how the future would look like upon achievement of that collective dream.

In that same spirit l offer you my people a challenge for the future. A challenge that would present countless opportunities and speed dial national progress upon victory.

Today a child in the rural areas of Zimbabwe only dreams of one day learning in the same educational environment as a child in the urban areas. The scales are naturally tilted against her and she too dreams of success in this country. Not only that, but also enjoying the same equal opportunities presented by education.

This is the hope of many children in our nation, and it is a hope that can carry us towards a better future if we allow ourselves to be moved. Maybe not for those little children in the rural areas, but for our nation of Zimbabwe.

Let’s Be Moved! I say this because a nation is only as advanced and accomplished as the level of skills and education of its citizens.

Education is the roadmap towards the greater things ahead for the future of our precious country of Zimbabwe.

Everyone should benefit from education because it is their guaranteed legal right as enshrined under Section 75 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

Today, a girl learning in the rural areas faces significant challenges that would deter and demotivate even the best of us. I’m talking about long distances to school on foot. I’m talking about enduring hunger so that she can complete her lessons. I’m talking about lack of access to technology and the conveniences of urban based learning.

But despite all these obstacles she too feels that success is possible in this country. She believes that the wonderful people of Zimbabwe care.

This is the future that we must fight for! A future where our care and love are seen in the steps we take and felt in the hearts of those whom we touch.

I come from a family where my parents are civil servants and since l was a child l have seen them educate the nation, serving our country and transforming lives. This is the heart that l have when it comes to Zimbabwe.

I believe in service that transforms lives and touches communities. It is my hope that all believers of education and lovers of Zimbabwe and humankind will join us in that journey of empowering the nation through education.

There’s a saying that states that, “Once a child has been raised in a certain path, they will never depart as they get older”.

My commitment to serve the people of Zimbabwe runs deep and has endured the test of time and l expect to continue honouring that promise l made in my childhood to serve the people.

Margaret Mead once said, “Never underestimate the will of a small group of people to change the world for it is all there ever has been”.

The greatness of our nation is not something that is accidental, but it is something that is very much deliberate and intentional.

Let us convert our good words into good deeds. All of us can contribute something towards the development of education and the improvement of livelihoods all over Zimbabwe.

Together we can make the future better for all people. It starts with education. It starts with you and me.
