A Bulawayo-based choir, Bulawayo Choristers, has made a desperate appeal for financial assistance to attend a high-profile choral competition in Harare this month – a gateway to a South Africa-sponsored festival.

The ensemble, chosen to represent Zimbabwe’s southern region, at the Tiro Mopane Foundation National Choral competition on September 20, fears missing out on this life-changing opportunity due to funding constraints. The choir urgently needs support for travel, accommodation, and logistics.
“This is a huge honour for us and the city of Bulawayo, but without financial support, we might not make it,” said choir representative Busani Nkomo, who is spearheading the fundraising drive.

This year’s event promises fierce competition. With a grand prize of R10 000 and a ticket to perform at the continental finals in South Africa, the stakes have never been higher. The Harare showdown will bring together the country’s most talented choirs, including four from Bulawayo: Bulawayo Choristers, Sound of Joy, Catholic Gregorian, and Sweet Melodies.
“This is more than a competition; it’s an opportunity to showcase our culture and talent on a bigger stage,” Nkomo said.

The choir, which boasts 120 passionate members, is well known for its rich repertoire of choral, gospel, and African folk music. For more than a decade, Bulawayo Choristers has dominated local competitions and earned recognition beyond Zimbabwe’s borders, scooping awards in both Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Contributions can be made by contacting Busani Nkomo on +263 77 227 1515 or +263 77 898 8885.
“Every contribution counts. Help us raise Bulawayo’s voice and represent Zimbabwe proudly,” Nkomo added.
