THE Institution of Mining and Metallurgy has now given full recognition to the course of training provided by the mining department of the Bulawayo Technical School.
Students who have completed the five-year course of instruction and have obtained the certificate of competence granted by the Southern Rhodesia Department of Mines and who have subsequently gained three years’ practical experience in mining will be considered for admission to the associateship of the institution.
This gives the mining department of the Bulawayo Technical School the same status as all recognised school of mines.
At the same time, the Chamber of Mines of Rhodesia has agreed to increase the minimum rates of pay for mining school students during the three years’ practical training.
Provided the student has obtained the National Technical Certificate, Part III, he will get £12 and 10 shillings monthly in his first year, £15 in his second and £17 and 10 shillings in his third.
The National Industrial Council has also agreed that mining school students who wish to become learners, as provided in the Council’s agreement, will be exempted from the first year of service as a learner, on certain conditions.
