Bulawayo prophet jailed 20 years for raping minor

The man, who had been robbed of his vehicle, cash, and valuables by a three-member gang, recognised one of the culprits, resulting in justice being served

A SELF-proclaimed prophet from Bulawayo has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping his 14-year-old congregant.

Nqobile Sibanda (41) of Emganwini suburb was convicted of rape by Western Commonage regional magistrate Mr Pasipanodya Maturure.

In delivering the sentence, Mr Maturure noted that the evidence against Sibanda was overwhelming and left no doubt that he committed the offence.

Prosecuting, Ms Melissa Dube told the court that on March 8, Sibanda asked the complainant to accompany him to buy opaque beer for use during a church service. Later that evening, around 6 PM, he again asked her to accompany him to a tuckshop to collect change.

“On their way back, Sibanda proposed love to the complainant, who rejected him. He then grabbed her hand, dragged her into nearby bushes and raped her. After the assault, Sibanda escorted the girl back to her home,” said Ms Dube.

Upon arrival, the complainant immediately told her mother what had happened. Together, they went to the police station to report the matter, leading to Sibanda’s arrest. The girl was later referred to the hospital for medical examination.
