POLICE in Bulawayo have launched a manhunt for a hit-and-run driver who killed two pedestrians along the Bulawayo–Plumtree Road.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the fatal accident occurred on 31 January at the 36km peg.
“An unknown motorist driving an unidentified vehicle struck two pedestrians who were walking along the road. Both victims sustained severe injuries and died on the spot,” he said.
The driver did not stop to render assistance and fled the scene, leaving the bodies lying lifeless on the busy highway.
Police have since appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed the crash or have information that could lead to the identification of the suspect vehicle to come forward.
“Anyone with information to contact any nearest police station,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
The ZRP has strongly condemned hit and run incidents, warning motorists that fleeing accident scenes is a serious criminal offence.
The tragedy has once again ignited calls for motorists to exercise caution, responsibility and humanity on the country’s highways as police intensify efforts to bring the rogue driver to book.
