SIMON Martin will be the man to beat in the Zimbabwe BMX Championships at Busters BMX Club tomorrow.
He won the title last year and is believed to be in great shape for the event. Should he win, it will be three times in a row.
“The 2023 and 2024 Elite Men’s Champion, Simon Martin will be defending his crown and hoping to make the triple,” said a spokesperson for the organisers and hosts Jackie Pikoulis.
The country’s best riders have all descended on Bulawayo for the explosive competition that has so much at stake.
The most outstanding BMX riders will be shortlisted for the Zimbabwe team for several international engagements. Chief among the attractions for the riders will be being part of the Zimbabwe team for the Brisbane, Australia World Championships next year.
Pikoulis, declared Bulawayo ready for the event.
“We are ready for the event,” she emphatically declared.
She said the course has been a hive of activity with both local and visiting riders having tryouts at the facility yesterday.
A drive past the facility by Zimpapers in the morning had scores of young riders in action enthusiastically riding on the beautiful track that has been hardened to suit the competition.
“Lots of riders from Harare are already in town and on the track today,” said Pikoulis who is aware of the challenge of being hosts.
If riders do not win on the course, gold for being super hosts awaits and judging from the preparations that have been going for months, Busters and Bulawayo are ready.
Pikoulis disclosed that preparations were coming together with official gate practice at 2PM today for all riders. This means all participants will have a feel of the facility ahead of tomorrow’s competition that promises to be a high energy activity.
All riders whose registration will be confirmed tomorrow will be expected to be at Busters for the 9AM start.
