Campus reflections: Beauty, challenges of university life

College is a wild ride, an exhilarating rollercoaster filled with laughter, tears, late-night study sessions, and moments that test your flexibility.

Managing university life is about finding balance, seeking support, and knowing you are not alone in this journey.

One moment, you are out with friends, cramming for that 8am lecture, the next, you are drowning in exams, surviving on adrenaline and questionable life choices.

Yet, amidst the chaos, there is undeniable beauty.

As we approach the end of 2025, we reflect on the myriad experiences that shape our lives as students.

There are the good, the bad, and the downright ugly that we carry with us.

Some students struggle to pass their exams, others drop out, face troubles with the law, or succumb to the perils of drug and substance addiction.

Tragically, some have lost their lives while others have exceeded all expectations. This is university and college life in all its intricacies.

It is understood that some of the situations at campus are not as expected; sometimes, it just happens, but I have always emphasised that in good spirit, every student should try by almost to do good things.

Every student left home and those at home are waiting in anticipation.

In this quest, don’t let them down.

In this segment, I always write both the triumphs and trials of this transformative experience.

From January, I have taken time to observe and engage with fellow students from different institutions, sharing notes and insights that enrich our collective narrative.

This platform is not a magic bullet, but it is an interactive platform where we should share ideas.

Certainly, the bottom line is that, despite the rollercoaster of campus life, we must learn from past mistakes, our own and those of others.

There is no need to repeat the mistakes unless they are linked to celebratory milestones.

University life is often romanticised in movies and social media, painting a picture of perpetual fun, intellectual stimulation, and personal growth.

Yet, the reality is a nuanced blend of exhilarating highs and discouraging lows.

Without a doubt, a university provides fertile ground for intellectual growth.

Students engage with diverse subjects, challenge their perspectives, and develop critical thinking skills.

Students usually benefit from exposure to expert lecturers and a stimulating curriculum, which creates an environment conducive to academic achievement.

One of the most rewarding aspects of university life is the opportunity to forge lifelong friendships with a diverse array of individuals.

Furthermore, networking with industry professionals mostly proves invaluable when seeking internships or job opportunities post-graduation.

Living away from home introduces a level of independence that is both thrilling and challenging. Students learn to manage their finances, time, and responsibilities, fostering personal growth and self-reliance.

Universities offer a lively array of extracurricular activities from clubs and sports to volunteering and study-abroad programmes that allow students to explore their interests, develop new skills, and enhance their profiles.

These experiences provide a much-needed respite from academic pressures.

However, the academic rigour often comes hand in hand with immense pressure.

Many students find themselves in a competitive environment that can lead to stress and anxiety, particularly those who struggle with time management.

The cost of higher education looms large for many students.

Tuition, books, accommodation, and living expenses can accumulate swiftly, resulting in substantial student debts.

Balancing part-time jobs with academic responsibilities usually adds to this stress and hinders performance.

Despite the companionships of campus life, many students grapple with feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Adjusting to a new environment, especially for first-time away-from-home students, can be incredibly challenging.

Some find it difficult to connect with fellow learners, leading to a sense of disconnection.

Moreover, the prevalent party culture at many universities lead to substance abuse problems.

While socialising and drinking are often part of the collegiate experience, excessive use can have severe repercussions for individuals and their communities.

Addiction and its consequences frequently disrupt students’ academic and personal lives.

University life can also sometimes bring toxic relationships, whether romantic or platonic.

The pressure to fit in may lead students to associate with individuals who negatively influence their lives.

Unpredictable events, such as personal crises, can dramatically disrupt university life.

These unforeseen occurrences generate uncertainty, impacting academic schedules, social structures, and overall mental health.

In essence, university life is a landscape of contrasts, a wall-hanging woven with moments of joy, stress, growth, and struggle.

While the positive experiences often linger in our memories, it’s crucial to acknowledge the challenges and difficulties that accompany this essential phase.

Students should approach university and college life with a balanced perspective and utilise available resources.

It is in my submissions, that students can manage this phase of life which is somehow chaotic, and ultimately rewarding journey.

Until we meet for a toast.
