YOU don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.
And for all students, no one starts great.
For greatness to be upon us, one must be focused.
However, the demons of college life often suffocate many students.
As I always say, the transition from high school to higher education marks a significant shift, where freedom often collides with the responsibilities of adulthood.
This week, I want to highlight the most critical pillars that help protect students from the wicked world.
Every student should be guided and protected by four essential principles which include, discipline, determination, dedication and diligence.
These principles emerge as guiding stars, capable of steering students toward success.
Sometimes, students go astray.
I am not a preacher, but I am an observer and conveyer of information.
Since this platform started, I have covered many issues affecting students and young people.
I have shared insights from a realistic perspective, as I frequently mix and mingle with students on various occasions.
Although I have not revealed my identity, I remain close to the students.
These four Ds not only shape a student’s academic journey but also play a vital role in their overall well-being, helping them avoid the pitfalls that many encounter along the way.
Discipline stands as the cornerstone of a successful college experience.
It is the ability to manage one’s time effectively, prioritise responsibilities, and resist distractions.
As the famous author and motivational speaker Jim Rohn said, “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.”
Without discipline, students become susceptible to the seductive allure of procrastination, late-night parties and social media rabbit holes.
The consequences of a lack of self-discipline can be dire.
Many students find themselves overwhelmed, unable to meet deadlines, and ultimately facing academic failure.
The stark reality is that some have dropped out entirely, unable to cope with the pressures of college life.
Fellow students, determination fuels the fire of ambition, pushing students to set and pursue their goals despite obstacles.
It is a quality that separates those who thrive from those who merely survive.
Moreover, determination empowers students to overcome challenges, whether it’s studying for exams, seeking help when needed, or balancing work and academics.
However, without this vital trait, students often falter, succumbing to discouragement and despair.
This frequently manifests in patterns of mischief, where some students engage in reckless behaviours that jeopardise their futures.
Dedication is another crucial D that plays a pivotal role in a student’s success.
It involves a commitment to one’s studies, a willingness to put in the necessary effort, and a steadfast focus on achieving long-term goals.
It is said, “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”
Students who embrace dedication are more likely to invest time in their education, participate in extracurricular activities, and seek internships that enhance their learning experiences.
Conversely, those lacking dedication may drift aimlessly, leading to a disconnect from their academic and personal aspirations.
Tragically, this lack of commitment can result in unwanted pregnancies, substance abuse, or even legal troubles, with some students finding themselves arrested or entangled in situations that could have been avoided.
In addition, diligence, the persistent effort and attention to detail, serves as a vital ingredient in the recipe for success.
It is the consistent application of hard work and the refusal to cut corners.
As Thomas Edison famously said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.”
Diligence encourages students to strive for excellence in their academic pursuits, ensuring they are thorough and attentive in their studies.
However, when diligence is absent, the consequences can be severe.
This is where we see students faltering, losing focus.
They may miss out on vital knowledge, fail to grasp essential concepts, and ultimately find themselves ill-prepared for exams or future job prospects.
The tragic reality is that some have faced dire consequences, including health crises or even death, as a result of neglecting their responsibilities.
Fellow students, the four Ds discipline, determination, dedication, and diligence are not merely abstract concepts, but they are essential virtues that can profoundly impact a student’s college experience and future.
As students take on the journey of academic life, embracing these principles will shield them from the myriad dangers that lurk on campus.
By cultivating a strong sense of discipline, unwavering determination, heartfelt dedication, and relentless diligence, students will forge a path towards success, ensuring that they not only survive but thrive during their college years.
We are what we repeatedly do.
From my perspective, excellence is not an act, but a habit.
Let these four Ds become the habits that guide every student towards a brighter, more successful future.
Until we meet for a toast.
