TRAGEDY struck in Gweru when a 36-year-old man from Mkoba 20 was crushed to death after he was allegedly run over by a car while sleeping on the tarmac along Chilimanzi Road in Mkoba 14.
Midlands Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the horrific incident which happened around 11pm on Sunday.
“Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road accident where a man died on the spot after he was run over by a car in Mkoba 14, Gweru,” said Insp Mahoko.
The deceased, identified as Progress Muranderi, was reportedly lying on the road near Nazarene Church when the tragic incident occurred.
According to police, Frank Rungwe (30), also of Mkoba 20, was driving a Nissan Note along the same road when he allegedly ran over Muranderi.
“It is alleged that Rungwe did not stop after the accident and a report was made at ZRP Nehanda by an anonymous caller. The scene was attended and the body was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary,” said Insp Mahoko.
In a twist to the story, the driver reportedly handed himself over to the police the following day.
“Around 4pm the next day, Rungwe surrendered himself to ZRP Gweru Traffic. Investigations are in progress,” said Insp Mahoko.
He urged motorists to remain alert at all times.
“We reiterate the call for drivers to exercise maximum caution and adhere to all road traffic regulations when driving,” he said.
Police are investigating circumstances that led to Muranderi lying on the road before the tragic accident.
