SEVERAL motorists, including kombi drivers, were fined for various traffic offences in a joint operation by police, and municipal police officers, to tame Harare CBD’s notorious traffic jungle.

The violations included dangerous parking and picking up or dropping off passengers at undesignated points.

Police also rounded up a number of touts.

In an interview, Harare District Traffic Liaison Committee chairperson, Nomore Phiri, said the operation served as a warning to traffic offenders ahead of the relaunch of the Harare District Traffic Police Client Service Charter, to be held near Copacabana rank today.

Officer Commanding Harare District Traffic, Chief Superintendent Michael Mumanyi, is expected to address motorists, pedestrians, commuter omnibus associations and vendors.

“We are urging all motorists, pedestrians, vendors and other road users to take part in the relaunch of the police Client Service Charter meant to bring sanity on our roads and in the CBD,” Phiri said.

The relaunch follows the national launch of the Client Service Charter by Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba. So far, other police districts, including Harare East, North, South, Mbare, and Chitungwiza, have also relaunched the charter in their respective suburbs.
