PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has conferred Liberation War Hero status on Cde Harry Macherure, the former Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association chairperson for Mashonaland West Province.
Cde Macherure died on September 5, 2026, and will be buried at the Harare Provincial Heroes Acre on a date to be announced.
ZNLWVA spokesperson Cde Cornelius Muoni said Cde Macherure made immense contributions to the country during and after the liberation struggle.
Recounting the life of the former freedom fighter, Cde Muoni said:
“Cde Macherure was born on November 21, 1960, in South Africa at Medolance Hospital. He attended primary school at Manzvi Primary School in Chipinge and later attended Kabrit Barracks Secondary School.
“He joined the liberation struggle in 1975 through Mozambique and trained at Takawira Base 1 and 2 training camps. He was subsequently deployed to the Tangwena Sector in Manicaland Province.”
He was assigned to the security team of the late national hero Cde Mayor Urimbo and later to Cde Dominic Chinenge, now Vice President (Retired) General Constantino Chiwenga.
Cde Macherure was withdrawn from the front and transferred to the rear in Mozambique after sustaining injuries in 1979. He was later reassigned for further training in Tanzania from 1979 to 1981, before being attested into the Military Police of the Zimbabwe National Army on November 21, 1981.
He distinguished himself as an astute professional and earned several medals, including decorations for service during the Mozambican and Democratic Republic of Congo campaigns.
Cde Macherure continued serving diligently in Zanu PF in various capacities in Chegutu District, where he rose to become the District Coordinating Committee Secretary for War Veterans in 2024.
He was later elected ZNLWVA chairperson for Mashonaland West Province in 2024, a position he held until his death.
Cde Macherure is survived by his wife, Nyarai, three children and five grandchildren.
