SOUTH African gospel lovers have called for more concerts like the Celestial Chorus, which took place at Carnival City here over the weekend.
The evening brought together some of the biggest names in gospel music and transformed the show into a joyful celebration of faith.
With a grand orchestra, an all‑star line‑up and generosity at its core, the Celestial Chorus, part of the Great God Tour, is fast becoming one of the most powerful worship gatherings of the year.
A breathtaking 100‑piece symphonic orchestra, a rare spectacle on the local gospel scene, elevated the evening’s spiritual experience.
The stage had a stellar line‑up that included Dumi Mkokstad, Mthunzi Namba, Mmatema, Mpumi Mtsweni, Janet Manyowa, Canaan Nyathi, Rudo Madindi and Sharon Cherayi, among many other artists.
Carnival City was filled to capacity.
Powerhouse performances from artists such as Lebo Sekgobela, Nontokozo Mkhize and Dumi Mkokstad underscored the show’s impact and left audiences deeply moved.
Music director and performer, Minister Everton Mlalazi, said the show exceeded expectations and brought people from different countries together.
“We had an amazing show, a full house with people from South Africa and Zimbabwe.
“South Africa and Zimbabwe were one.
“We sang in Shona, English, Zulu and isiNdebele. It was an electric night from song to song.”
Mlalazi added:
“From song one to song twenty, the crowd was with us. I am super excited.”
The crowd enjoyed live renditions from Mlalazi’s critically-acclaimed album ‘In His Presence 3: Great God.’
Organisers say the event’s goal is not only to deliver a top‑tier live production but also to create a sacred space where communities can gather and celebrate their faith together.
The free show was made possible by the sponsor Bridging Gaps Foundation, which covered all associated costs as a means to bridge financial barriers and welcome as many people as possible to the celebrations.
Following its successful debut in Zimbabwe, Celestial Chorus promises to continue bringing together diverse artists in a large‑scale gospel collaboration which celebrates faith through powerful worship and heavenly music.
Fans praised the concert for its collaborative spirit and its ability to uplift, inspire and unite people through music.
“What a night, you could feel the unity in the room. The music lifted everyone’s spirits,” said Sipho. Thandi said the stellar performances brought togetherness between South Africans and Zimbabweans.
“The orchestra gave the songs a whole new dimension. I felt closer to God than I have in a long time.”
Another fan, Zanele, said:
“Seeing South African and Zimbabwean artists on one stage was so powerful. It was worship without borders. We want more of these gospel concerts.”
Themba said it was the energy which impressed him.“The production, the voices, the energy, everything was top class. I left rejuvenated.”
