Chapungu wallop MSU to extend lead

CHAPUNGU extended their lead at the top of the Central Region Soccer League after a comprehensive 3-0 win against MSU in a Gweru derby at the Campus Grounds on Sunday.

In-form striker Edward Watson scored a brace while Divine Sibanda added another for the Air Force of Zimbabwe side.

The win saw Waru Waru open a three-point gap at the summit of the standings with 10 points after four rounds of matches.

It was a crucial win for the former Premiership side as it puts pressure on other title contenders Kwekwe United and Shabanie Mine, who are set to clash on Wednesday at Maglas in a rescheduled fixture.

Shabanie Mine now trail Chapungu by three points while Kwekwe trails by four points.

Kwekwe United coach Tendai Chikuni sounded defiant of his side’s chances of clawing their way back into contention.

“At this stage, we cannot be talking about the title and promotion,” said the experienced tactician.

“There is still a long way to go in the campaign. Our focus is on the match against Shabanie, who we play next.

“Shabanie are a good side and very difficult to beat, especially when they are in the form they are in, we have to be at our best to come out with a result.”

In other matches played over the weekend, West Nicholson edged Good Morning 1-0 in Zhombe, while Grain Tigers and Tongogara settled for a 2-2 draw at Mbizo with Nkosi Khane on target.

Vhembe Stars Academy and Matobo played out a goalless draw in Beitbridge, while the match between Sabi Gold Mine and Gwanda Pirates was abandoned due to heavy rains and a waterlogged pitch.

Rescheduled match day four fixtures begin today with ZRP Gwanda hosting Shurugwi FC, while Blanket Mine are at home to FC Platinum U19.

Super Strikers clash with Dulibadzimu United at Phelandaba tomorrow.
