The Chefunye Social Association for Arts and Culture Organisation (CSA), in collaboration with author Mercy Muda, recently hosted a joint event that combined the launch of three books and the inaugural Community Business Development Awards.
The event, held on Saturday at Yeoville Hotel in Johannesburg, was led by CSA chairperson Dominic Vundla alongside author Mercy Muda.
Muda unveiled two new Ndebele books – Ngasohlangothini Olumnyama and Izehlakalo Zemvelo (Iqoqo Lezindatshana), as well as an English title, Whispers in the Dark.
The Community Business Development Awards recognised outstanding contributions in various sectors, including cross-border transport, hardware, baking and farming, fashion, arts, and design, among others. Participation was free, with winners selected through public votes on the CSA digital platform.
CSA public relations officer Zinhle Ndebele described the event, themed “Triple Book Launch and Community Business Development Awards”, as a milestone celebration of creativity, entrepreneurship, and community excellence.
“The project was a collaboration between Mercy Muda, a renowned author, and the Chefunye Social Association. It began with a short story writing competition for young, upcoming writers aged 16 to 35 from districts such as Tsholotsho, Bulilima, Hwange, Lupane, Nkayi, and Bulawayo.
“Five winning stories were selected and will be published in a compilation book, with cash prizes ranging from US$300 to US$500,” said Ndebele.
She added that the initiative reflects CSA’s mission to empower communities through the arts, literature, and entrepreneurship.
“We’re proud to have recognised talented individuals and businesses in our community. This event marks the beginning of many more projects that will nurture creativity, inspire growth, and empower people from grassroots levels,” said Ndebele. – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
