Chegutu man nabbed after three-month crime spree

A 29-year-old man from Chegutu who has been on the police wanted list in connection with 14 counts of unlawful entry and theft has been nabbed after a three months crime spree.

Simbarashe Khotiwani ran a lone ranger terror crime spree in which he wreaked havoc by unlawfully entering residence that would have been left unattended, stealing valuables ranching from cell phones, cash, speakers, laptops and their accessories among other valuables from November last year to this month.

“In one of the incidents on 22 November 2025, the suspect reportedly broke into a house and stole a laptop, 1 000 rand, US$450 and a smartwatch before fleeing undetected,” said the national Criminal Investigations Department spokesperson, Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri.

She said on December 14, 2025, Khotiwani struck again, breaking into another residence and stealing US$850, laptops and cell phones, among other valuables.

Det Muteweri said maintaining the same modus operandi, Khotiwani is accused of breaking into another house on 28 January 2026, getting away with US$800 while on 13 February 2026, he allegedly targeted yet another home and stole three laptops along with other valuables.

“His alleged crime spree came to an end on the same day after detectives received information that he had been spotted at a shopping centre in Chegutu attempting to sell a cellphone. Swift follow-ups led to his arrest,” said Det Insp Muteweri

Following his apprehension, said Det Insp Muteweri, police recovered a welding machine, several laptops and multiple cell phones and the suspect is now assisting police in clearing all 14 cases of unlawful entry and theft.
