NKAYI traditional leader Chief Dakamela has taken aim at social media users who thrive on negativity, saying toxic online behaviour is holding back community development.
In an interview, the outspoken chief said Nkayi has made some strides but still has a long road ahead and online hate is one of the major roadblocks.
“Social media is dangerous and can kill, but if used well by disciplined and sober-minded people, it can defend and protect the community,” said Chief Dakamela.
He urged people to use social media constructively instead of spreading hate.
“Toxicity or negativity is not a building block for development but a hindrance, especially if directed at weak people. You may be entitled to your opinion, but let’s use these platforms to build, not destroy,” he said.
The chief said some people had a spirit of destruction that resists progress.
“Kodwa siyakunanzelela ukuthi labo aba destructive vele ngeke sabantshintsha ngoba ngumoya ongayisiwo abalawo. Mhlawumbe abafisi ukuthi kubeyithi esikhanya sisenza konke khonalokhu,” he said.
On development, Chief Dakamela said Nkayi was still “fueling up” for its first stage of growth.
“We are just approaching stage one in terms of development. We’ve cultivated our name, and people are now seeking rural stands in Nkayi. That’s how development starts,” he said.
He pointed to tangible projects such as a network booster by Econet, a vocational training centre, a new stadium, and the tarring of the Bulawayo–Nkayi road as key milestones in transforming the district.
Chief Dakamela said the Imiklomelo kaDakamela initiative remains central to progress, linking the area with development partners.
“Before every event, we engage partners who later invest in Nkayi. That’s what makes people want to come and stay here,” he said.
Since taking the throne in 2019, the chief has spearheaded several programmes, including Isiphala Senkosi, Dakamela Housing Project, Education Foundation Scholarship, and Isibaya Senkosi — all aimed at empowering his people.
