A TWO-YEAR-OLD boy died while receiving treatment from a faith healer in Zengeza on Friday.
Anesu Khaliwo was experiencing breathing difficulties when his mother, Nicole Mavunga (22) went to visit her uncle in Ushewokunze.
Concerned for her son’s health, she quickly confided in her uncle, Phillip, realising that Anesu’s condition was worsening.
Feeling helpless, Phillip and Nicole sought assistance from a local faith healer, Christine Nyakudya (72), who was known in the community for using unconventional methods to assist people.
Upon arriving at the healer’s house in Zengeza, Anesu started crying uncontrollably while gasping for air.
In a desperate attempt to alleviate the child’s distress, Gogo Nyakudya inserted her fingers into Anesu’s mouth to remove saliva that she believed was obstructing his breathing.
After Anesu managed to spit out the saliva, he suddenly lost consciousness. Panic ensued as Nicole and Phillip realised the gravity of the situation.
They rushed Anesu to Citimed Hospital for immediate medical attention but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
ZRP Harare provincial spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident, saying, “Police are investigating a sudden death case in Zengeza, Chitungwiza. The now deceased was taken to a faith healer for prayers.
“This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between faith and medical intervention, leaving a community grappling with sorrow and unanswered question.”
