In a bid to continue promoting local talent among ghetto youths, local clergyman Brighton Tony Chikomo has challenged Chillspot Family for a music battle under the popular trendy beat (riddim) ‘Nguva YaChivayo Riddim.’
The Zimdancehall Riddim was first created by Chillspot Records, while prophet BT Chikomo, who is affectionately known as Commander 1, also created another version.
Both riddims are dedicated to businessman Sir Wicknell Chivayo and in an interview with The Herald Arts, Commander 1 said since the Chillspot Family version is much dominated by uplifting the Mbare side, he wants to give a chance to the other marginalised side.
Commander 1 said his version was centred on fighting young marriages, child abuse, and drug illicities.
“I have created the riddim called, ‘Nguva YaChivayo’ and I want a clash with the Chillspot Family either at City Sports or PaDziva in Dzivarasekwa,” he said.
“Nothing is new under the sun and that is art. I want to give voice and opportunities to those talented.
“We have a lot of untamed talent in different suburbs. I have also identified various youths who agreed to be on the challenge.”
Known for spearheading the anti-drug campaign in surrounding suburbs to the youth by supporting the arts industry, musicians and actors, Commander 1 said is yet to approach Chillspot Family.
“We need to approach them after we are done with the recordings and all, but as of now they should know we are here and take it upon themselves to accept the challenge. Music is universal and is business, no bad blood, but we also want them to see that talent does not only come from Mbare,” he explained.
The talent manager believes in art, music, movies and drama among others to send a message to the community.
“The above-mentioned disciplines can be used as a tool to give a signal or send a message of influence to the youths nowadays as this is what they believe in,” he said.
“In the art industry, I have created various concepts including the popular riddim which is going to attract more than 60 upcoming artistes with the first 30 selections to run soon in the ‘Nguva yaChivhayo Riddim’.
“We aim to collaborate with giants such as Chillspot Family, Boss Yala, and other Zimdancehall acts. We are much inspired by house music also.
“We have extended our invitation to both locals and international to participate in ‘Dzivarasekwa Nguva YaChivahyo Riddim’, supported by Kingvibes, Nhubu, and, Morestaff, among others.”
