As Sulumani Chimbetu marks two decades in the music industry, the Orchestra Dendera Kings boss says his journey would be incomplete without recognising the invaluable contributions of female arts promoters.
The 43-year-old recounted how female arts promoters sacrificed for him to realise his potential and be counted among the elite group of stars.
He also revealed that some of them played motherly and sisterly roles, which he firmly believes took him places.
As he marks 20 years as a professional artiste, he cherishes the love some people have shown him over the years.
He also expressed admiration for female arts promoters, who dedicated themselves to bringing joy to both revellers and creatives.
He mentioned figures such as Mama Red Rose (Barbara Chikosi), Nancy Manyaya of Presdom Promotions, Karen “Mai Jojo” Madake, and the sole remaining active female promoter, Wanisayi “Mahwindo” Mutandwa.
“It’s always a marvel to acknowledge the incredible work done by female promoters who are making a mark in this male-dominated field of art promotions,” he stated.
“I have a lot of respect for them, especially Mama Red Rose, Mai Manyaya, and Mahwindo Promotions, among others.”
Reflecting on his relationship with Mahwindo, he recalled meeting her in 2005 at a national gala, where she offered him advice that he still values today.
“The guidance she provided from day one has meant a great deal to me,” he emphasized.
“As I celebrate my 20 years as a professional, I couldn’t ask for more from her. I will do my best to support her in every way I can.”
He added:
“What Mahwindo has done by creating this arts space is a big milestone for the industry because we need this in our sector.
“If you look closely, we have been experiencing a shortage of venues to hold shows in Harare. This development is noble for those itching for a space where we can perform and interact.
“After all, we also need to give them business for all the good they have done for us to be where we are at the moment. In showbiz, we need to uplift each other’s brands and be recognised for good efforts.”
He also saluted Chikosi for helping with advice when he went solo after separating from his uncle Allan Chimbetu around 2006.
“There are people who genuinely supported me when I was a novice despite having the backing of the core of the Orchestra Dendera Kings.
“Mama Red Rose is one of the people I will always cherish in this music journey, which has been full of thorns and trials. I was shocked to realize that angels still existed when I was in my darkest hours, and I won’t forget all this.
“I have witnessed this kind of love from many people who stood by me, and this is the perfect opportunity for me to return the favour as I reflect on the journey I have walked. I will continue to honour them and acknowledge the good work they did for me to be where I am today.”
Since joining the Orchestra Dendera Kings in 2005 after the passing of his father, Simon “Chopper” Chimbetu, Sulu has consistently made his mark in the showbiz landscape.
He has released eight solo albums and has received support from various local arts promoters, including esteemed female events managers like Chikosi and Mahwindo.
These female promoters have left footprints on the showbiz landscape hard to ignore for their efforts.
