BRIGHTON  Chimene has put himself on the front row of top football referees in the country after earning another FIFA appointment.

He seems to be following the path walked by some of the country’s top referees, led by Felix Tangawarima, who is now a FIFA referees’ instructor.

Tangawarima is a record eight-time Zimbabwe Referee of the Year.

Chimene, the reigning Referee of the Year, has been appointed to handle the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between South Sudan and DR Congo, scheduled for the National Stadium in Juba on September 5.

Chimene will be assisted by 1st assistant referee Luckson Mhara, 2nd assistant referee, Edgar Rumeck, and fourth official, Lawrence Zimondi.

ZIFA hailed Chimene’s latest appointment.

“This prestigious assignment reflects the continued trust and recognition that Zimbabwean match officials are earning on the international stage.

“We congratulate our officials on this appointment and wish them every success as they represent the nation with professionalism and integrity,” said ZIFA in a statement.

On Tuesday, the 35-year-old Chimene was in the middle for the headline clash between Senegal and Sudan at the ongoing CHAN Finals Tournament in East Africa.

The match ended goalless.

Already this year, Chimene handled the CAF Under-17 assignments and emerged as the referee who took the most games (five) in the tournament.

He also went to the COSAFA Cup and handled the final.
